Michelle Obama Announces Funding for Military Families; Plus, She Reveals She Isn’t 100% Responsible for her Fashion

First Lady Michelle Obama Announces Military Funding

One of the First Lady’s top priorities has always been to provide support for military families.  Keeping her promise, she announced last week that the administration’s budget proposal will include a record $8.8 billion for military family support programs. The programs’ objectives are to assist military spouses and their families with housing, child care, counseling, and other services.

During a “Today” interview shown last week, Michelle admitted to Matt Lauer she has “people” to pick at least a week’s worth  of outfits for her so she won’t have to worry about what to wear each morning.

She is quite aware the entire world is interested in what she’s wearing (or not), she had this to say:

“I don’t think that much about the response to it. I wear what I like. I wear what’s comfortable.”

Accessories Make the Dress

Bochic Earrings, Michelle Obama, State Dinner

There was much talk about the dress Michelle wore to the State Dinner, but for whatever reason the earrings didn’t get much attention. According to New York Magazine,  the hand-made, rose-cut, pear-shaped amber and tourmaline earrings were courtesy of Bochic.  Company representatives won’t reveal the price but their earrings start at $5,000.

French Elle Names FLOTUS Not Carla Bruni Best-Dressed

Michelle Obama Carla Bruni

In French Elle’s annual “Best Dressed” issue,  Michelle topped Carla Bruni, former model and wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, in the ”political chic” category.

This is the second year in the row a foreign first lady has beaten the French First Lady for the honors. Ouch.

J. Crew Doubles Profit

Michelle Obama J. Crew Fashion

One of Michelle’s favorite retailers, J. Crew reported its profit more than doubled in 3Q.  According to the Associated Press, the retailer earned $43.9 million or 67 cents per share, in the quarter that ended Oct. 31. That compares with $19 million, or 30 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue rose 14% to $414.1 million from $363.1 million. Analysts had expected $408 million.

CEO Millard Drexler attributed the success to its products, quality, design, and creativity. We think it didn’t hurt that one of the most famous women in the world has publicly worn your clothes and garnered media buzz that money can’t buy.

Report: First Lady Orders Thigh-High Boots

Michelle Obama Lanvin Sneakers

Thigh-high boots are definitely hot this season. We’ve seen all of the A-list celebrities - Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez,  – photographed in a pair. And it looks like we’ll soon see our First Lady rock them as well. According to AFP, she ordered a pair from renowned French shoe designer Robert Ciergerie.

The black boots with flat heels (size 9 1/2), which retail at a reportedly several hundred dollars, will inevitably cause negative publicity when Michelle decides to wear them. Remember the uproar when she wore the $540 pair of Lanvin sneakers to a charity food bank?

Jason Wu Has Never Met the First Lady

During an interview with the Washington Times, designer Jason Wu reveals he still hasn’t met Michelle even though she chose to wear one of his creations on inauguration night and has worn a dozen more since. The funny part about this interview is Jason says now he would be a little too busy to meet the First Lady (aka the woman who made him famous):

I’d definitely love to in the near future, but now I’m really, really busy working on my pre-fall collection and moving to my new studio space.

Here are a few of the Jason Wu pieces Michelle has donned over the last few months.

FLOTUS a No-Show at Glamour Magazine Awards

Fashion Michelle Obama Glamour First Lady 44It wasn’t a big surprise but Mrs. Obama didn’t appear at last night’s celeb-filled Glamour Magazine Awards 2009 Women of the Year Awards in which she was honored with a Special Recognition award (and a December cover). Former president Bill Clinton, famed author Maya Angelou, paparazzi starlet (also R&B singer) Rihanna, media magnate Tyra Banks, and  journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling were just a few of the who’s-who in Hollywood, politics, and fashion at the event.

Here are some non-First Lady photos from last night’s event. Enjoy.

P.S. The red cocktail dress and chunky, sterling silver necklace she wore on the cover were from her own closet and no designer was credited.  (oh well in a sad voice)
